Living in an RV and having to have your birthday in a place with no house and none of your friends can be rough on a kid. In our house birthdays are REALLY big deals… I mean you are only a kid for so long and then you get to the point where you don’t want to be aging, or you don’t really celebrate with a big shindig anymore, so when you are little its a big deal. When you are little you still get excited about each and every one of your birthdays, you count down the days and dream about all the fun things you are going to get. You ask everyone when their birthday is and try to see who is the oldest. It’s a big deal in those little kid minds and in our house we want to play up on that emotion. So last summer when our two oldest had birthdays and we were living in a place where they really did not know anyway, and we had nothing because we were living in an RV waiting on a job offer to come, we did birthdays a bit differently.
We started out with Landons birthday. He wanted to go play putt putt golf (which is something we did not have a lot of in the last two places we had lived), so we took advantage of the gorgeous Southern Summer weather and went to play putt putt golf. He got decked out in Alabama gear for his birthday because we lived in Alabama and could finally find Alabama gear that did not cost us $50 a piece (Hallelujah for that blessing).
Braddoc is my kid with his own fashion sense. He loves to get dressed up, he loves nice clothes and for some reason he ALWAYS wears a shirt with either a sweater, a button up shirt or another shirt over it. Its kind of funny because that’s exactly what my memory of my Dad is. He always had a shirt on with a flannel or button up shirt on over it, it was like it was his coat, and what he wore when he was “dressing” up. I just laugh inside every time I see Braddoc because he reminds me so much of my Dad. It was super hot outside, but he did not seem to care one bit, he still rocked his sweater and pulled up socks. Man I love that little weirdo.
Tayton also likes to wear long sleeves in the summer time. I don’t know what the deal is with my kids, but they never complain about being too hot, so I’ll take it.
I love this little lady of mine. She is so girly and so much fun. I just adore her.
The kids had a blast playing putt putt golf. I wish we could go a million more times. They were just so much fun to watch. Of course it took forever for our family of 6 to play a hole, so we had to let lots of people go by us but we didn’t mind, we had nowhere to be and nothing to do but celebrate our big 8-year-old boys birthday.
The place we went too was a Safari themed park and their were animals all over the place. Noah and I came here when we were first married and still living in Alabama and played a round of golf with some friends. I had a picture of me “kissing” this zebra, I wish I could find it, and so I thought it was hilarious when my daughter went and kissed the zebra too… like mother like daughter. Another funny tidbit from that trip so many years ago… my sandle totally broke just a few holes in, and my friends handyman hubby got a nail from his truck and jimmy rigged my sandle back together so the fun didn’t have to stop. Ahhh the days of being young and carefree.
I can’t believe that he is 8 and now almost 9…. where did the time go? My first baby, the one who made me a mom is growing up right before my eyes and I can hardly believe it. I fight back tears all the time when I think about the fact that he is almost half way done being at home with me. If these last 9 years have flown by what are the next 9 gonna do? My boy is no longer a baby anymore.
This picture is blurry and its hard to see because the sun was so bright, but this little stinker ended up beating all of us fair and square, no “Cheating” on mom and dads part.
Since I did not have any of my cake decorating things, nor did I have any way to do a big party for him, he asked that we do an ice cream party and he wanted a “yellow, colorful cake, with green words and sprinkles” so that’s exactly what we did.
We invited a friend of mine that I have known for years and her boys (who are the same ages as my oldest boy’s) over and then all of my cousins for a kickball game and some cake and ice cream.
I have to admit, I was loving having an ice cream party… but honestly all the kids and adults piled so much crap on their ice cream that very little of it actually got eaten, and by the end of the night I was a bit sick of looking at ice cream related things, but he loved it and that’s what matters the most.
My good friend Amy brought her new puppy over and Aowyn was in Heaven playing with and loving on the puppy.
The down side of living in an RV for your birthday is that once you have all the fun presents, you have nowhere to put them… that was a lot of fun, finding places for all the gifts. And boy did he get spoiled with gifts. My cousins all went over board and bought him some awesome stuff, which was great seeing as how this was the first time they had ever seen my kids and this was the first time we had been back in 8 years. I was feeling so bummed that my son had to spend his birthday away from friends and it brought tears to my eyes to see everyone make it so special for him. One of my cousins got him a razor scooter, which was fabulous for him since he was outside all the time and had nothing to play with outside.
My dads dad, my Papa came out to celebrate with us, which was wonderful because he is getting so old and I was really hoping that my kids would have some bonding time with him. He is one of the reasons we wanted to spend time in Alabama, because I wanted to have him meet my kids and be around them, I wanted pictures of him with them and I feel so blessed that we got that opportunity.
Landon and Braddocs birthday’s are only 8 days apart, so just a week later we got to go to the Nasa Space and Rocket center in Huntsville, Alabama. I loved coming here when I was a kid and loved getting to share this with my kids. It was free for Military that week which was a big blessing to us, free on Braddocs birthday… just wonderful. I love the big shot rides and they had a little one for the kids there, and they just loved it.
The kids got to do some indoor rock climbing. Landon was too scared to go to the top but Braddoc and all his upper body strength was booking it to the top… he however was too scared to come back down, he tried to get Landon to go to the top to get him but he refused, so one of the workers had to go up and help him. He ended up getting back down most of the way, with us talking him through it step by step and then they had him just repel down… that was fun too, trying to get him to kick off from the wall and come back down… he really did not want to do that.
They had a really cool like kids play area space ship for the kids to play in and our kids had a blast in that thing.
After all the fun at the Space and Rocket museum we went back to the house and had his party. He loves the big eyed babies (stuffed animals) and wants a new one for every special occasion (he has since he was 4).
He wanted a Captain America cake, which was a bit harder for me to do, seeing as how I had no cake making stuff and an RV sized kitchen to make it in, but I think it turned out pretty well considering.
We parked our RV in my Grannys driveway so we used her house to shower and hang out in. We got to have both of the kids parties in her house, which was another big blessing for our family.
Braddoc does not like big crowds or lots of people around him and especially on his special day. We did not have hardly anybody there for his celebration (which made family a bit upset) but it was his day and he did not want anyone there. (The year before he hid in his room for the first hour of his party, so this year we learned from that mistake and did not invite anyone aside from his one friend there.) After that we went and took that friends to see the TMNT movie…. which of course came out on his birthday. I don’t think he could have asked for a better birthday present then that.
I can’t believe its been a year since all that happened and here we are a week and a half away from Landons 9th birthday and 2 and a half weeks away from Braddocs 7th. They have talked non stop about their birthdays and have been counting down the days for a few months. Ahh to be a kid again and to have those kinds of dreams and excitement over your birthday.
I love being a mom, I love seeing their faces light up with excitement about things. I love celebrating their birthdays, I love rejoicing over the day that I gave birth to little parts of my heart. They are my world and I am blessed to call them mine and to be their mom.
