My youngest, Fynnock, turned 2 in April. He loves animals and music and all things sweet so when I saw a picture of a circus themed party I knew right away that’s what I wanted to do for his birthday. I kept telling myself I wasn’t going to go overboard, but that didn’t really go as planned. I went all kinds of overboard (for me at least) and I’m not a bit sorry about it.
It was a hard birthday for me because my baby is growing up too dang fast. Being the baby of 5 and the only one home with me all day has given us a special bond. I have never got to spend as much one on one time with any of my kids as I have with him. My oldest got 2 years of just mommy time all day long so he takes a close second and then my daughter had 2 years of her brothers in school alone with my before she started school and before baby brother was born. I’ve enjoyed my alone time with each them but I think because he is my baby these years feel extra precious, especially because I feel like they are flying by at an insane rate. I definitely had mixed emotions preparing for this birthday because of how fleeting time feels. I cried because its gone by so fast and I rejoiced in celebrating this amazing little man. He is all kinds of perfect and has made my life even more blessed.
I had a blast creating a Circus Themed Party for his birthday. I looked at a million pinterest pictures and shopped like a crazy lady for a few months before his party. I wasn’t going to leave anything out of this Circus Themed Party goodness.
I love the island in our kitchen/keeping room because it has been perfect for party staging and all things food/decor. I hung some table cloths to create the back drop and then painstakingly hung the balls and pinwheels. Those things did not want to stay so I rehung them about a million and one times. That may be a slight exaggeration, but only a slight one.
I bought different sized jars and buckets from Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart to house all the food. I got most of the candy from orientaltrading and then the rest from Sam’s club. Those are definitely the best places to buy candy in bulk.
I added some cute ribbon the some of the jars to add some more color to the area, because you know there wasn’t already enough color. Whats a Circus themed party without tons of colors?
I got the adorable labels and bags for the animal crackers at orientaltrading as well. They were super cheap and came in a pack of 50. I filled them with different kinds of animal crackers and stapled them shut. I got the bigger buckets at the dollar store and filled them with all sorts of goodies. This cake was the bane of my existence. I literally threw some things and cried A LOT. I swore I would never make a cake again and I was only going to buy cakes from now on. I am not a baker or a cake maker. I love throwing parties and decorating everything but baking and cake making, nope those things do NOT make me happy. I decided I’m leaving that to the experts. Life to short to be angry over cakes, and to lose sleep over something I hate and am not even good at. HAHAHA y’all better hold me to this.
I learned a long time ago that I am also not a good cookie maker or decorator so I also leave that to the professionals. There is a lady in my town who makes the cutest cookies ever and I’ve commissioned her to make cookies for the last few birthdays ( you can see my daughters barbie ones here). They turned out so good and I am so impressed with her talent.
I used a red, blue and yellow theme, if that wasn’t obvious already, I mean every circus themed party has to have those colors right? I bought fabric squares from Hobby Lobby and laid them down on top of my stripped table-cloth that I got from Oriental Trading. It came in a massive roll so I used it in several places and still have lots left over.
I also used colored tissue paper inside any of the containers that didn’t fit my color scheme and to give extra dimension to the table decor.
I had a grand idea of giving the kids tickets for playing the games and then having them come buy candy based on the ticket prices…. but the morning of I decided that I didn’t want to spend all of my time keep up with kids wins and tickets because I wanted to enjoy my baby boy and his party. So instead I gave all the kids bags with 35 tickets in them and had some of my girls from our church youth group be the ticket takers. The kids still used their tickets to buy up the candy and it worked super well. There was no crazy kid taking all of one candy and then others not being able to get any (I’ve had that happen at countless parties) so I think I liked my last-minute plan better than my original anyway. No Circus themed party is complete with out Cotton Candy (from Sams Club) peanuts, and Popcorn (Dollar Store). I got the metal containers at Wal-Mart (I’m obsessed with their Galvanized metal line) and the popcorn bags as well as the peanut containers from Oriental Trading Co.
The adorable scoops in all the containers also came from Oriental Trading.
I got Circus tattoos, clown noses and goodies boxes from Oriental Trading Co. I swear this post isn’t an Ad for Oriental Trading, they honestly have no clue who I am…. I just happened to find a massive Circus Party themed line with them and went crazy buying it all (remember that over the top thing?)
Outside I had a grand plan that didn’t work out even remotely how I wanted it too. I used my striped role of plastic table-cloth to try to make a big top tent. The wind was so bad that the big top tent did not want to stay put. The cute little fabric ripped banner looked good though. At least something worked the way it was supposed too.
I ordered a few games online from Oriental Trading and the kids had blast playing with them. (There were several more games but I some how missed taking the pictures of those.)
The party turned out great and all of our favorite friends came to celebrate our littlest mans 2nd birthday. We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our life and I could never thank them enough for loving our family. Happy birthday sweet Fynnock. You are the most amazing boy and the perfect addition to our family that we didn’t know we needed as much as we did. We love you.
Fynnocks super low key 1st birthday party (I had just had 2 surgeries and wasn’t in any shape to throw a big party. Maybe thats why I went overboard on his 2nd birthday)
