I’m going to start off right away with an apology. Life is so crazy right now between all 5 kids, the holidays, endless amounts of travel ball games, and All star soccer practices/games that sometimes the only time I have to take pictures is after the kids are in bed…. which is the reason for the terrible lighting in lots of the pictures. So don’t hate me too much.
If I had to choose between y’all and my kids, my kids would win, however this blog helps me keep my sanity, so its might be a close race. So enjoy the pictures, bad lighting (and toys under the couch) and all.
This year for Fall I only decorated my living room. Like I said, its been a bit of a stressful few months and after I took down all the Halloween decorations we decided to rearrange the furniture for the Christmas tree and then decorate for Thanksgiving and Fall, and honestly between all of that my “Lets decorate the whole house” mentality was failing me. Don’t worry it will be back for Christmas I’m sure. You can see our full Fall home tour from last year here, where I did decorate the whole house, or at least the downstairs part.
Our living room has been a work in progress since we moved in. Its been hard for me to really decorate the way I want too because its super long but not super wide. Its a big space and I can fit a ton in there but because of the staircase, doorways, fireplace placement, and the opening to the sun room, there is very little actual wall space to put things (like the TV). The wall with the bookshelves is very long and can be hard to decorate. The carpet is gross and needs ripped out, one day I’ll have better flooring in here, but until then this will all have to make do.
Our fireplace is so much fun to decorate and has gone through a lot of transformations (see that post here). It’s at an odd spot though because it’s not centered on the wall, so its harder to decorate around. One day I would like to maybe move it over and center it on the wall. It is a gas fireplace and hasn’t been working lately anyway. So maybe that day will come sooner than I think.
I am so excited to have this wall done and the stair rail looking so gorgeous. I am still working on my post for this spot so stay tuned. You can see what this looked like when we moved in here, hint: it wasn’t fun or pretty.
My husband laughs at me because I will walk into the room, and stop and stare at the staircase and sigh. One day both sides will be open and that day will be a glorious day.
Last year we had the TV on the other wall. This year we decided to move it back to the fireplace side. It’s literally gone back and forth several times and I can’t decide which I like better. When it’s on the other wall the couches have to be parallel so the kids like it better than when the TV is by the fireplace because they can see the TV better. I like the couches better like this too…. but I think we need something to fill a few empty spots. Minimalist I am not.
I have grand plans to build a small box around the base of the fireplace. I really want to get that done before Christmas and I finally settled on what I am going to do and how I am going to do it so now I just need to time and money. HA! Story of my life lately. Anyone else feel that way?
There are a ton of doorways in the living room. One heads to the front door, one into the keeping room, one into the sunroom and one into the alcove where our Master bedroom is. I love how open it is, but also how divided all the rooms are. I decided at our last house that I did not like the open concept floor plan very much and so with this house we wanted something different. You can see just how open our last house was here and here. That house had a ton of natural light and that’s about all I miss about it.
Our mantel is so much fun to decorate for the holidays. I talk about the remodel on it here… bye bye ugly green tile. And you can see last years decor here.
This year I tried to go Minimalist. I saw other bloggers doing that and loved it. And then I started and my own personal decorating persona took over and went to town and I remembered I am not a minimalist. HA! Who was I kidding? I love it full of stuff. My husband came home and said this was by far his favorite Fall mantel to date (we have only been in a house with a fireplace 2 years so that’s not saying much, but still.)
I love the look of this wall with the TV and the small touches to the rest of the space. I did go more minimalist in most areas, so see I do have it in me, somewhere, probably really really deep down. Seriously…. can we just take a minute to swoon together. I built that y’all. I mean with the help of my Dad, but still, I did it. People ask me if my husband did it and I chuckle at the thought of him picking up a tool and building something. I mean not that he is not a manly man, he is just more of a sports man then a builder man. He plays the supportive role in all my building endeavors and plays a mean game of baseball or soccer with the kids while I work.
Also total side note: I started painting that chair, you know the multi colored one on the left? And I hated the color so I stopped and haven’t bought a new color to paint it yet. I thought about moving it to my room and hiding it from view but I’m nothing if not totally honest with y’all so I wanted to show you what it’s really like around here. Half painted chairs for the win.
I’m also pretty giddy to finally show you the entry way make over. It’s also come a LONG LONG way. But it’s not quite done so patience my friends. You can see what it looked like when we moved in, but it definitely doesn’t look like that anymore.
I also have big plans to make the trim around the other walls thicker and wider which I’m hoping to maybe tackle this next year, but I’m not certain yet.
I love the white bookshelves and have a blast decorating them for the holidays. I got ride of all my washed out muted Fall colors this year and went with the more vibrate oranges, reds and yellows and I am totally loving it. I don’t think I’ll ever go back, but check with me next year.
I am also liking the placement of the furniture for now. We shall see how long that lasts. I’m a fickle decorator. That’s why it takes me so long to actually start a project. Because I want to make sure its really what I want first.
Real life folks, see the purple little whistle on top the cabinet? My baby learned how to blow it and is loving it. Me? Not so much. So I put it on the cabinet and forgot about it until I was editing pictures. Oops!!
More real life photos. I didn’t even see that sticky note that my daughter put on the TV cabinet until after I was done taking pictures. And by then I was tired and didn’t feel like going back to take more. What can I say? Mom life is full of surprises and I love it.
Last shot of the living room. The partially painted, full of kid toys, rarely photographed children’s playroom/sunroom in its own natural eliminate. This is the side of the photos you never see….. unless you’re reading my blog and then I show the reality to you all the time.
Happy Fall Y’all.
I went out with a friend the other day who saw a sign with that and said she was over it…. Oh well!! I’m over the signs but I won’t stay actually saying it.
I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week. I hope y’all have wonderful plans filled with good friends, family and delicious stuff your bellies full, food. I hope for you that as my 11-year-old son says, you have mile high mountain of mashed potatoes, ham or turkey that fills the house with hot and divine smells and enough food to feed an army of Gorillas (we may or may not be watching a lot of the Flash lately.)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS.
