Halloween Home Tour 2017

November 3, 2017 by Finding your joy in the journey

It’s no secret that I love HALLOWEEN. Every year I try to make our house as spooky as I can. Some years I do a theme (whatever our Halloween party theme is) and some years I just got with it.

This year our theme was Hocus Pocus and I decided that I wanted to have a color scheme going in each room. Our living room was black and white themed and so I rounded up all of our black and white decor and set to work creating our Halloween Home Tour for 2017.

Our living room is already full of softer muted colors with some black and browns thrown in so creating my color scheme in this room wasn’t so hard. Last year I painted our bookshelves from black to white. With the black bookshelves I felt like the decor was hidden but the last two years since our bookshelves have been painted white I’ve felt like the decor popped a bit more.

I set up our Halloween tree as well hoping that our little man would learn not to touch the ornaments on the Halloween Tree so that when the Christmas one came out he would know not to touch those ornaments. We shall see how well that works out.

I have been working on painting the stairs and the wall so our home tour includes some tape on the wall (best part of the tour I’m sure). You can see our home tour from before we moved in here, to see what our house looked like before we started demo and remodeling.

DSC_0740 Our little Halloween tree makes me smile and gives me that little bit of holiday tree lit magic to hold me over until Christmas.

Decorating bookshelves has to be one of my favorite things to do. I change-up the decor for the holidays and then sometimes during the year just because I want too.
DSC_0792DSC_0793This year I made our little “Come little Children” sign super fast one night to add to our decor to fit in with our Hocus Pocus theme.DSC_0794

I absolutely love our new remodeled fireplace, especially decorated for the holidays. That was one of the first projects I tackled after we moved in and I’m so glad I did.DSC_0737 I still need to build a base around the bottom of the fireplace. That is on my to do list before the end of the year, so we shall see if I actually get to it. Now that y’all know, you have to hold me accountable. Okie dokie?DSC_0738 DSC_0739

The spiders remind me of the 2nd Harry Potter movie, The Chamber of Secrets, when the spiders are fleeing and you can see them crawling up the wall. It kind of makes me a bit giddy. Yes, fake spiders crawling up the wall makes me giddy, it’s the little things in life y’all.DSC_0743 DSC_0744

I drapped spooky cheese cloth all over the living room and my husband had the nerve to ask me what made that spooky…. I basically stuttered and said “Because….. it does, okay?” I mean gray and black cheese cloth drapped over stuff= spooky right?DSC_0746

DSC_0702 DSC_0747

I added in some spooky little sprigs into my different flower vases around the room (making sure I stuck with my black and white theme) and pretty much love it all. Ahhh Halloween, you have my dark soul feeling all the pitter patters. Okay maybe my soul isn’t dark, but my favorite color is black, so that is kind of the same thing right?DSC_0703

DSC_0705
Moving on into the keeping room where I decided to go with a bit more fun, whimsical colors. Orange was the main theme color but purple and green made an appearance too.

You can see in my little hutch that I turned it into a bit of a witches apothecary cabinet and it does my soul good to finally feel like I have the stuff I love in a spot that seems like it was made just for it.

When I got this hutch I knew this was exactly the place I was going to store my potions bottles for Halloween and this year was my first year being able to do that. It made me smile when I filled it up with all the Harry Potter potion goodies. You can read more about my potions here and here.DSC_0750

I love the bookshelves in our keeping room. They were one of the first things that made me fall in love with our house. I am a bit of a book-worm and couldn’t wait to display all my books in one place.DSC_0756
DSC_0759 Plus they are super fun to decorate for the holidays.DSC_0760 DSC_0755Having a double-sided fireplace was another thing that made me fall in love with our house.

Two fireplace mantles to decorate? Sign me up right now!DSC_0761 I made this wreath this year to go along with our Hocus Pocus theme. When I decorated the mantel I knew that something was missing, and this wreath was exactly what was missing.DSC_0762
DSC_0764 I love the flow of our house and how the spaces are open but that they are also sectioned off. I discovered a few years ago when we had a super open floor plan that I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, I knew I wanted something that was open and flowed well but that could also be closed off if I wanted it to be. This home fit the bill perfectly.
DSC_0817 DSC_0818 How about that gnat catcher there? I had a friend come visit and wanted to know that the heck that was hanging in our kitchen and keeping room. I laughed and said “A staple in all southern homes.” Its the highlight of the home tour isn’t it?

The keeping room is right off the living room and down the little hallway in the formal dining room at the front of the house.

DSC_0839DSC_0828

A formal dining room was also on my must have list when we bought the house because I wanted a place to decorate for the holidays and year round that could stay that way. This is the first year I could actually decorate the table the way I wanted too for Halloween and when I found my cute little skeleton plates at Homegoods I knew that they would go perfect on the table.DSC_0765

The “napkins” are just fabric I had lying around that I cut into small rectangles and folded them to be napkins.DSC_0779

I bought the “table-cloth” at Hobby Lobby, it’s just fabric that I made into a table-cloth.DSC_0766

The cute little spider web fabric also came from Hobby Lobby. We live in a small(ish) town and up until a few months ago Hobby Lobby was the only place to buy fabric. Now we have a Joann Fabrics… whoot whoot!! Seriously super excited about that. I’ve been missing Joann’s. Now we need a Homegoods, Red Robin, PF Changs and Smash burger and I will be mighty content. Can someone who knows the powers at be let them know my wishes? Perfect, thanks!DSC_0853

The buffet is always fun to decorate for the holidays and since this room is finally coming together it has been fun to decorate that space even more. Now I just need to get some pictures printed out to fill those frames.
DSC_0848
DSC_0840As you can see the color theme for this room was black and purple. I have lots of fun pieces that have those colors in them so it was fun to incorporate them into the space. I loved going with the color theme this year. I really felt like I finally decorated more like I have been wanting to for years.DSC_0841

DSC_0780

The white hutch is also in the formal dining room and I always get the most excited about decorating it. The white hutch and the white dishes are the perfect back drop (accompaniment?) for most holiday decor. Adding in touches of black just makes it look even better. I decided I need to be on the hunt for more purple pieces to adorn the hutch next year (that is if I don’t pick a new theme before then, I’m really good at changing my mind.)DSC_0772DSC_0773

DSC_0790I’m still absolutely loving the blue color that I painted the walls in here last month! It’s such a pretty color in this space and decorates well. I’m even more excited to decorate it for Christmas.
DSC_0775
DSC_0777Our dining room is right next to the entry way when you walk in the front door. When you walk in the front door you turn left for the dining room or go straight ahead for the living room. I love that it all flows so well. I recently (like today) painted the walls in the entry way to a super dark gray and I am LOVING it, the light gray in there felt washed out and not classy. The new gray with the white board and batten makes my heart burst with decorating heart bubbles.

DSC_0778

You can see the front entry from the living room as well. I painted the front door black this year and absolutely love it. I am now debating on whether or not to paint our bedroom door black as well.

Our staircase is coming along well also which makes me super excited to have it finished.

One day we will tear out the other wall and make it a super open concept. I also have some big plans in mind for that little section of wall that has the map and the J on it.

Check out my cutie pie boy making a cameo.DSC_0808

I loved being able to decorate our entry way board and batten with hooks this year. It’s the first holiday we have had it done for and it really was a lot of fun to dress it up for the holidays. I wanted to make a broom parking sign to hang above the hats and brooms but I never got around too it, so many projects, so little time.DSC_0783
DSC_0785
The baseboard in this space will be removed and replaced in a year or two when we redo the floors so I didn’t finish the bottom of the board and batten because I didn’t want to have to rip out the bottom and redo it only to have to rip it out again later and redo it again. So for now it just sits there mostly complete.

I hope you enjoyed our Halloween home tour. Everything is coming down soon and Thanksgiving is going up. My husband asked me if I could just go straight to Christmas but I do want to get some Fall in, even if it’s just for a few weeks. Happy Halloween

    Words to live by

“Give your child a compliment and a hug; say, ‘I love you’ more; always express your thanks. Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved. Friends move away, children grow up, loved ones pass on. It’s so easy to take others for granted, until that day when they’re gone from our lives and we are left with feelings of ‘what if’ and ‘if only.’ … “Let us relish life as we live it, find joy in the journey and share our love with friends and family. One day, each of us will run out of tomorrows. Let us not put off what is most important.” - President Thomas S. Monson
