Spooky Halloween Bookshelves

October 21, 2016 by Finding your joy in the journey

I mean really, Did anyone actually think wasn’t going to bombard you with lots of Halloween goodness before the month was over? It’s all I have been talking about for weeks so I HAD to share with y’all my Haunted House Tour, starting with my Spooky Halloween Bookshelves. My Halloween Buffet was featured in a Post here so you can go check that out.

First stop on the Tour is my Halloween Bookshelves and a sneak peek at the fireplace which will be featured in the next post.

I have been wanting white bookshelves for ages, when we found the black ones we have I said I wanted to paint them white, that was 4 years ago and I finally decided it was time. I painted my bookshelves from Black to White at the beginning of the month (because I wasn’t busy enough already, its crazy how I can decide to throw big projects in the middle of chaos, my husband loves that about me.)

I have been obsessed with Halloween most of my life. I still dressed up as a teenager and my husband and I still dress up as a couple. I collect Halloween things anytime I see them so really I collect all year-long. Going into a Halloween themed store is super dangerous for me because I want to buy EVERYTHING.

I was so excited to decorate my bookshelves to go along with our Haunted Mansion themed decor. I collected pieces from my many, many bins of Halloween decor and grabbed some other pieces that were already decorating my living room and combined them all on the shelf.

I found my Trick of Treat banner a few years ago at Target and haven’t actually got to use it yet since we have moved doing Halloween the last few years. I love the black and gold glitter against the white.

Most of my pillows I have been collecting for years and/or made myself. I used placemats from Target to make the Poison and Venomous pillows a few years ago. I also made most of my other pillows using black and white fabrics, you can see my tutorial for how to make a pillow case for every holiday here.Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey

I found the coffee table on Craigslist and still need to get it painted but it fits with the spooky theme right now so it works. I found the cloche at Target and added a skull that I’ve had for years. I LOVE the spooky factor that it brings to the space. I also threw a spider web table runner from Michael’s under it to add a bit more “Haunted Mansion” feel to the space.Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey I love that you can see the fireplace next to the bookshelves. I re-tiled the fireplace the begining of this month as well and still need to finish a few things in that space. I plan on building out a platform on the bottom and ship lap the wall going up the back of the fireplace, as well as paint that area a more vibrant black. I really love the look of the space right now but am excited for more to come.Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey

Target has the coolest selection of animal skeletons this year so I had the kids pick out one and they chose the snake to decorate our space. Its so darn spooky. Target also has a rat I want to go back and get. I got the large white skull at Michael’s on clearance. I added a few of my “creepy” book titles and of course some Harry Potter books to the mix.Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey

Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey I have been collecting apothecary bottles over the years and love the look they give to the space. I changed out some of my frames and added more creepy pictures. Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey

I love the feel the vintage cameras bring the space. I left a lot of the decor the same and just mixed in more spooky pieces to give the Halloween Bookshelves more of a haunted feel. I have a few more things I want to do to the bookshelves but I am very happy with them for now.Spooky Halloween Bookshelves finding your joy in the journey

I just found a bin of Halloween decor that I forgot to get out so I will be adding a few more spooktacular items to the Halloween bookshelves over the next few days. Our annual Halloween Party is next Saturday so I better get busy finishing that up. I also have to finish sewing our Halloween costumes. I can’t wait to show them to you. We will be creating a theme for our van to go along with out costumes for our Churches Trunk or Treat so I pretty much need 2 more of me to get everything done. Wish me luck, good thing this is the kind of stuff I enjoy immensely.

Stay tuned for my Dining room, and both fireplace reveals as well as the rest of the living room. Happy Haunting.

    Words to live by

“Give your child a compliment and a hug; say, ‘I love you’ more; always express your thanks. Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved. Friends move away, children grow up, loved ones pass on. It’s so easy to take others for granted, until that day when they’re gone from our lives and we are left with feelings of ‘what if’ and ‘if only.’ … “Let us relish life as we live it, find joy in the journey and share our love with friends and family. One day, each of us will run out of tomorrows. Let us not put off what is most important.” - President Thomas S. Monson
